Chopta is one of Uttarakhand's best kept secrets. Known as the Mini Switzerland of India, this meadow at 2680 metres is the base for the Tungnath trek the world's highest Shiva temple at 3680 metres and the Chandrashila summit at 4130 metres.
Best Time To Visit
March to June: Rhododendron forests in full bloom. Clear skies and excellent mountain views. Ideal for beginners.
October to November: Post monsoon clarity. Stunning views of snow capped peaks. Less crowded than summer.
December to February: Snow covered trail. A magical winter experience but requires warm gear. Temple remains closed in winter open only May to November.
How To Reach
- From Delhi: Take overnight bus or train to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Then bus or shared taxi to Ukhimath via Rudraprayag. Distance from Delhi approximately 460 km.
- From Rishikesh: Drive via Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath to Chopta. Distance 220 km. Takes 7 to 8 hours.
Nearest town is Ukhimath 35 km from Chopta. Chopta has no railway station road is the only option.
The Trek
Chopta to Tungnath Temple: 3.5 km one way. Moderate gradient through dense oak and rhododendron forest. Takes 2 to 3 hours going up and 1.5 to 2 hours coming down.
Tungnath to Chandrashila Summit: Additional 1.5 km from temple. Takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. At the top you get 360 degree views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Chaukhamba and Bandarpunch.
Total trek distance: 10 km round trip including Chandrashila.
Difficulty Level
Easy to Moderate. Suitable for beginners and families. Children above age 8 can complete this trek comfortably. The trail is well defined and not steep except the last stretch to Chandrashila summit.
Tungnath Temple
Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar temples the five sacred Shiva temples of Garhwal. It is believed to be 1000 years old. The temple enshrines the arms of Lord Shiva. Temple is open from May to November. Darshan timing is 6 AM to 7 PM. No entry fee. Puja available for Rs 100 to Rs 500.
What To Carry
Warm layers even in summer temperature at Chandrashila drops to 0 degrees at night. Rain jacket from June to September. Trekking shoes with grip trail can be slippery in rain and snow. Sunscreen and sunglasses for summit day. Carry your own water as sources are limited on the trail. Light snacks like dry fruits and energy bars.
Accommodation
Chopta has basic tent camps and small guesthouses. Budget options Rs 400 to Rs 800 per night. Comfortable camps with meals available at Rs 1200 to Rs 2000 per night. No ATMs in Chopta carry enough cash from Ukhimath.
