Nainital was designed by the British for the British — a hill station that would feel like England in the Himalayas. Naini Lake at the centre, a proper Mall Road, boats, a club, racecourse and snow in January. What the British did not count on was how thoroughly Indian the place would become. Today Nainital is one of the most loved and most visited places in Uttarakhand. Here is how to make the most of it.

What Makes Nainital Special — and What the Crowds Miss

Most visitors to Nainital spend their entire trip on the 1.5 km Mall Road and on Naini Lake. This is fine — the lake is genuinely beautiful and the Mall Road has good food and shopping. But the Nainital that locals know is a different place. The seven hills surrounding the lake each have their own character. Naina Peak at 2,615 metres offers a 360-degree view that includes Nainital lake below and Trisul and Nanda Devi in the distance on clear days. Most tourists never climb it. The Kilbury Bird Sanctuary 10 km from the main town has over 580 bird species and almost no visitors outside serious birders.

Bhimtal, 23 km from Nainital, has a lake three times the size of Naini Lake and a unique island aquarium in the middle of it — the only island aquarium in India. The crowd at Bhimtal is a fraction of Nainital's. A combined Nainital-Bhimtal trip gets you the best of both without spending your entire time in queues.

Naini Lake and Boat Rides

The lake is 64 metres deep and 1.5 km long. Paddle boats, row boats and motorboats are available from the flats area on the south side of the lake. Rowing around the full lake takes about an hour and costs Rs 150 to Rs 300 per boat depending on type. The light on the lake in the morning before 9 AM and in the evening after 5 PM is particularly good — most tourists do their boating at midday when it is at its least atmospheric.

Snow View Point

Take the ropeway from the Mall Road base to Snow View Point at 2,270 metres — the cable car journey takes 4 minutes and costs Rs 250 per person return. From the top on clear days you get an unobstructed view of the Himalayan range including Nanda Devi and Trisul. The best visibility is in October-November and February-March. In summer the haze can obscure the peaks. The ground at Snow View Point often has actual snow in December and January.

Nainital Zoo

The Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo is genuinely worth 2 hours. It sits at 2,100 metres and has animals that require high altitude conditions — snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, Tibetan wolves and red pandas. Children find it fascinating and adults are usually surprised by how good the enclosures are. Entry is Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children.

Eco Cave Gardens

Six interconnected natural caves carved into a hillside, each named for an animal — tiger cave, flying fox cave, panther cave. The caves range from comfortable standing height to genuinely tight squeezes. Children love it. Adults over 40 with any back or knee problems should skip the tighter caves. Entry is Rs 75 per person. Best visited in morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat)

A 4 km walk from the Mall Road or a horse ride for Rs 400 to Rs 500 return. The view from the top looks down over Nainital town and lake with forest on three sides. It is a proper walk through oak and rhododendron forest — not a tourist attraction but a genuine hill walk. Carry water and wear good shoes. Best in morning before the heat of the day.

Day Trip to Bhimtal and the Island Aquarium

Bhimtal is 23 km from Nainital and is genuinely underrated. The lake is larger than Naini Lake and the area around it is quieter and greener. The island aquarium in the middle of the lake is accessed by a small boat (Rs 50 per person) and has 50 plus species of freshwater and marine fish in a surprisingly well-maintained facility. Children find it extraordinary. The boat ride to the island takes 5 minutes each way.

From Bhimtal you can also visit Sattal (Seven Lakes) 7 km further — a complex of seven interconnected lakes in dense forest that is one of North India's premier birdwatching locations. Non-birdwatchers find it a beautiful spot for a picnic. The drive from Bhimtal to Sattal through oak forest is itself worth the trip.

Best Time to Visit Nainital — Month by Month

March to May is peak tourist season — warm, pleasant, everything open. Also the most crowded. Weekends in May particularly can be extremely congested. Visit on weekdays if possible and book accommodation well in advance.

October and November are my personal recommendation. The monsoon has ended, the air is crystal clear, the Himalayan views from Snow View Point are at their best, and the crowds are a fraction of summer. Temperature is around 8 to 18 degrees — bring a jacket for evenings.

December to February is cold and quiet. The lake occasionally freezes at the edges. Snow falls on the hills above the town occasionally. Mall Road restaurants are warm and cosy. Hotel rates drop significantly. If you are comfortable with cold this is a lovely time — the town feels genuinely Himalayan rather than a tourist attraction.

July and August are monsoon months. Roads can be blocked by landslides. The hills are lush and green but the rain can be persistent and driving to Nainital is genuinely risky in heavy monsoon. I advise waiting for September.

How to Reach Nainital

Kathgodam is the nearest railway station to Nainital — 35 km away by road. From Delhi the Ranikhet Express, Nanda Devi Express and Shatabdi trains reach Kathgodam in 5 to 6 hours. From Kathgodam shared cabs and our pickup service cover the 35 km to Nainital in 45 minutes. By road from Delhi the drive takes 6 to 7 hours via Moradabad and Haldwani on NH9. Direct Volvo buses from Delhi Anand Vihar ISBT to Nainital run daily and take 7 to 8 hours.
