I have been taking groups rafting on the Ganges since 2019. Every batch that comes back from the 16 km Shivpuri run has the same look on their face β part exhausted, part lit up. That look is why I keep doing this. Here is everything you actually need to know before you book Rishikesh rafting.
Why Rishikesh Rafting is Different From Other Rivers
Most rivers in India where you can raft are remote. You spend half your trip just getting there. Rishikesh is different β the Ganges is right there, minutes from the main town, and the rapids are genuinely good without being reckless. The Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch covers 16 km of river with seven named rapids including the famous Roller Coaster, Golf Course and Club House. For a first-time rafter, this route is almost perfectly calibrated β enough to get your heart pounding, not so much that you spend the whole time gripping the raft in terror.
The other thing that makes Rishikesh special is what surrounds the river. Dense forest on both banks, temple bells drifting across the water in the morning, the occasional monkey watching from the rocks. When a rapid calms into flat water, the silence is total except for the current. I have done this run over 200 times and I still notice those moments.
The Three Rafting Routes β Which One Should You Choose
There are three main rafting stretches in Rishikesh and choosing the wrong one for your group is the most common mistake first-timers make.
9 km β Shivpuri to Rishikesh (Beginner Route)
This is the right choice if you have children above 14 years, older adults in the group, anyone who is nervous about water, or if you want a gentle introduction. Grade 1 and Grade 2 rapids only. The run takes about 90 minutes on the water. Cost is Rs 600 to Rs 800 per person for the rafting alone. The scenery is beautiful but the rapids are mild β more bumpy and splashy than truly thrilling.
16 km β Marine Drive to Rishikesh (The Sweet Spot)
This is the route I recommend for almost everyone. Grade 2 and Grade 3 rapids, three hours on the water, and the seven best rapids on the Ganges are all on this stretch. The Roller Coaster rapid is the highlight β a 200 metre series of waves that will have your whole raft screaming. Cost is Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per person for rafting alone. With our 2-day adventure package including camping, all meals and bonfire it starts from Rs 3,499 per person.
26 km β Marine Drive to Rishikesh Full Run (Experienced Only)
The longest and most challenging option. Includes Grade 3 and Grade 4 rapids. Takes a full day. Only suitable if at least some members of your group have rafted before. Do not attempt this as your first rafting experience β the Body Surfer and Three Blind Mice rapids on this stretch are genuinely demanding. Cost starts at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per person for the run alone.
Best Time for Rishikesh Rafting β Month by Month
This is the question I get more than any other and the honest answer is more nuanced than most travel sites tell you.
October and November are the best months overall. The monsoon has just ended, the river is clear blue-green, the weather is pleasant with temperatures between 18 and 28 degrees, and the rapids are lively but not dangerous. Crowds are manageable. This is when I personally prefer to take groups.
February to May is peak season. The water is colder β you will feel it β but the rapids are excellent in March and April when snow melt adds volume to the river. May is hot outside the water but the splash keeps you cool. Rafting is excellent but book at least 2 weeks in advance as popular operators fill up.
December and January is possible but cold. Water temperature drops significantly. Wear thermals under your wetsuit. The rafting itself is good, crowds are minimal, but many first-timers find the cold water uncomfortable. Worth it if you are comfortable in cold conditions.
June to September β do not raft. This is absolute and non-negotiable. The monsoon swells the Ganges to dangerous levels and all legitimate operators suspend rafting entirely. The river looks deceptively calm in some sections but can surge without warning. Every year without fail there are accidents during monsoon season from people who tried informal operators. Avoid entirely.

Rishikesh Rafting Safety β What You Actually Need to Know
The Ganges near Rishikesh is one of the safest rafting rivers in India when you go with a legitimate operator. The rapids are well-mapped, the river bed is free of dangerous obstacles on the main routes, and the rescue infrastructure is good. But there are things you must do.
Always wear your life jacket. This sounds obvious but people loosen them or take them off to feel free. Do not. A Grade 3 rapid will toss you off the raft faster than you expect and a loose life jacket is useless.
Listen to the pre-raft safety briefing. Every good operator gives one. Pay attention to the defensive swimming position β feet first, toes up, arms out, on your back β because if you go in, that is what gets you to safety. I have seen people panic and fight the current, which exhausts them. The river does not care. Go with it and wait for rescue.
Non-swimmers can raft. The life jacket does the work. Just be honest with your guide before you get in the raft so they seat you in the middle and watch you closely through the big rapids.
Book with certified operators only. All legitimate Rishikesh rafting operators must register with the Uttarakhand Tourism Department and meet safety standards. Ask to see their licence. If they cannot show one, leave.
How to Reach Rishikesh From Delhi

- Old shoes or sandals you do not mind soaking β flip flops are not suitable on the raft
- Waterproof bag or dry bag for your phone β your guide will carry it in the raft

- Sunglasses with strap β regular sunglasses fly off in rapids

- Cash for optional extras like bungee jumping (Rs 3,500) or cliff jumping if you want to try
What not to bring: your main phone camera, expensive jewellery, anything you cannot afford to lose. Waterproof phone pouches are sold at every shop in Rishikesh for Rs 100 to Rs 200 if you need one.
Bungee Jumping and Other Adventure Activities Near Rishikesh
If you have come all the way to Rishikesh for adventure, the rafting is just the start. Jumpin Heights operates India's highest fixed bungee jump at 83 metres just 15 km from town β it costs Rs 3,500 and needs to be booked a day in advance. Giant swing, flying fox zipline and a high suspension bridge walk are also available at the same facility. Our adventure packages can include bungee as an optional add-on.
The Beatles Ashram β officially Chaurasi Kutia β is a 10-minute walk from Ram Jhula and is worth 2 hours of your time. It is where John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr stayed in 1968 and wrote most of the White Album. The abandoned buildings are covered in street art and the forest setting is genuinely atmospheric.
